Recommended Reading

Below is our list of recommended books to read, suggested by Matthew Ling. These books will sharpen, stir and strengthen you in your walk with Jesus.

• The Community of the King - Howard A Snyder

This book does a good job of presenting the church as Kingdom Community and frames church life in the context of the Kingdom of God.

• How to Read the Bible For All It's Worth - Gordon D Fee and Douglas Stuart

This book introduces you to the richness of reading the Word of God. It contains key principles for interpreting Scripture whilst always remembering that reading the Bible is above all about intimacy with God. This book is a great read for anyone wanting to deepen their experience of the Word of God.

• The Holy Spirit in the Bible - John Rea

This book is effectively a commentary on every passage of the Bible which mentions the Holy Spirit. The book can be read cover to cover or used for reference – very useful!

• Smith Wigglesworth Apostle of Faith - Stanley H Frodsham

Smith Wigglesworth was a plumber from Bradford and a powerful evangelist and worker of miracles. This book will excite and provoke you as it continually gives testimony to the power of God at work through his servant.

• Man to Man About Woman - James Dobson

Dobson at his best. Every man should read this book – preferably before getting married! In a society where everything is relative and gender-roles are at best ill-defined and at worst something abhorrent, Dobson may seem “old-fashioned” – but God has a distinct place and plan for men and women in marriage.

• The Sound of the Harvest - J Nathan Corbitt

Not a book for beginners, but for those involved in music and worship in the church this is a fascinating book. It is presented as a text book for a course of study, and would work well in a group setting, but also can be read through a chapter at a time. A book that opens out music and ministry in a way that broadens horizons beyond charismatic church worship.

• The Radical Church - Bryn Jones

In Bryn's own words "God is looking for a people aware they are born for such a time as this... we know that inside the grace of God he has chosen us in particular to be his voice and testimony in the closing of an age."

An encouraging read that challenges what we call church and church community.

• Through New Eyes - James B Jordan

This book introduces us to a depth of biblical imagery that will amaze you! Jordan shows how every image God uses in the Bible is to illustrate something of his person, power and plan for the universe. Lots of “wows”!

• Paul, The Spirit and the People of God - Gordon D Fee

A theological book, but don’t let that put you off! Fee is one of the most accessible theological writers and here he puts forward a clear, concise and practical theology of the Holy Spirit.

• The Sixty Minute Father - Rob Parsons

Allegedly to be read in 60 minutes, this short book refocuses busy Dads onto the true priorities in life. Full of poignant stories, sharp insights and helpful advice, every Dad should read this book regularly!
